picked up a free 83 50 h.p. mercury came with no key and keycode is missing??

Helped somebody they asked if i wanted this motor it didn't come with the key or throttle and shift cables. The tilt and trim switch feels shot so i was just going to get a used control box and cables but the place in town wants 150 bucks for that and i was wondering how can i test the motor first before buying that? i already tested the hydraulics they work but i am having problems bypassing the ignition to see how the motor will work?

disconnect the harness and jump start from the Relay switch to start and choke to kill it do not run this outof the water or without ear pumping water though the engine it will overheat and BANG!

You could take the control/boat to a merc dealer.
They usually have a ring with a bunch of keys on it one of which will be the right one.

good key shop with lock smith can make a key....lost my key,,,took him 5 min.
