weak Mercury 1250

Last year I aquired a 1960's 18' cabin cruiser with a 1969 Mercury 1250. The motor starts great but has extreme trouble pushing the boat through the torque hole when trying to rev up to high rpms. If it makes it it runs great, but it usually takes me 10 tries to get up to speed. I'm willing to sacrifice final speed for better low rpm torque, so I thought of putting on a different prop. Unfortunately I have no idea how to pick the right pitch/diameter for that purpose,
Any suggestions?

you need more info to help diagnose. What is the RPM at wot. What pitch are you using now? what is the level of the lower unit tail to the bottom of the boat? There is also a section on the forum for prop questions this might have someone with more knowledge on this subject

Thanks, my lack of knowledge on outboard motors is so that I don't even know what questions to ask ;). Is there an easy way to determine the pitch?

props usually have them on them 17P 21P etc. look for this.
