auto vs marine

my friend is going to need a lower end for his 89 merc 5.7 but he has a 91 350 for a truck can he use it but just change out the cam?

Im sure you will get a more qualified individual to answer this but from what I understand, the truck motors are what companies like Rapido use to build their marine engines and what is consistently recommended when building a marine engine

He will need to change the cam adn the head gaskets to Stainless steel. He needs to make sure he uses all the marine add ons, (alt, dist, starter, coil, carb, etc.) The heads will ofter have bronze valve guides.
