My 1999 Merc 50hp has flooding issues. The only way I can get to to start and stay running is one of two ways: I can pinch the fuel line coming from the tank so it can't get fuel or I can just unplug the fuel line and it will run fine until it runs out of gas. As soon as I unpinch the line or plug it back in, it starts running rough and will die.

I'm thinking a float could be stuck. The local mech pulled the hose off the fuel pump that goes to the top cyl. We then pumped the bulb and a little fuel came out. It said there should be no fuel there. I would agree but the pump pumps fine. I bought a rebuild kit because it was a cheap option. Whatelse do you guys think it could be?

Could it be the little choke/prime gizmo? Just another option that popped in my head.

Thanks

KrazyKevin. I'm anxiously waiting for someone to answer your flooding problem, because mine is very similar.
I posted my question last August, 2011 with no answer to my flooding problem. I've rebuilt and had my carbs apart 3 times and see no issue with the carbs themself. I did buy a fuel pump kit to rebuild the fuel pump this spring, as someone mentioned to me where I live, that possibly a bad fuel pump was pushing too much gas past the needle valve
causing my flooding problem. I have the same problem with running. As soon as I unplug the fuel line from the engine, the engine will start running, until the float bowls empty. Soon as I plug the fuel line back in, it dies. Hope you have better luck with an answer than I have, but I will be watching.
