Came across a used drive hopefully for a backup .I have the upper driveshaft housing apart for a reseal. All good so far except the bearing cup in the top cap is loose and slides out . I found it when it fell out while removing the top cover. Do I now have to replace the bearing cup, roller bearing and top cover? Is this normal for the cup to be loose ?

No, it's not normal. You need a new cap, then reset rolling torque, which then requires gear height adjustment.

At least I can keep the old bearing and cup. Have to borrow some tools again. I was hoping for an easy job. Thanks for your help again. Hmmm. If the rolling torque works out the same with the old cap shim does the gear height still have to be measured? The answer is probably yes but hopefully I can save a little bit of time.

I would recheck it. It's cheaper than new gears. Think about the blue words in my signature ;)
