25 hp evinrude maybe 1978 not sure lower unit shaft spline

i have a 25 hp evinrude motoer that when i took the lower unit off i found that the top of the shaft is 4 splined but the power head is more than that and larger diameter . am i missing a adapter or is this not the right shaft .the motor was like this when gave to me.

The two splines need to be identical. Best to talk to the person who gave the engine to you.
