I recently broke the pull cord on my 1967 Johnson 3hp. I was wondering how to replace the pull cord? Seems like it should be something I can do myself and decided not to take it anywhere to get fixed. Appreciate any help with the matter.

If the spring is still wound, pre-load 4 spins and try new rope.

Howdy, dj.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Recoil starter servicing is not complicated, but it can be dangerous unless it is done exactly by the book. That spring is a mechanical cobra.

Wear good heavy gloves and safety glasses and follow an OEM Service Manual.

Good luck. :)

If the rope broke when pulled out, you can almost bet the farm that the resulting backlash wrecked the spring. Long story short is that you have to take it completely apart and fix it. That actually is easier to do than typing out the instructions.
