well normally im pretty good at working on motors but this one is a brain buster, a friend of mine brought a little suzuki 2hp outboard over for me to work on, its an older one, probably 80s model, and i cant get it to do anything

he said before he brought it over, he had drug it out of a barn, put mixed gas in the tank, and it cranked and ran so he shut it down to put it in water tank to run, he said it ran for a minute in the water, then just petered out.

ive gone over it from top to bottom, had the entire motor apart and off the lower end, and cant figure out why it wont run, it has a good hot spark at the plug, you can hear the reed valves sucking air in when you pull the pull start, its got good compression and wont start up no matter what.

we poured gas in the tank and nothing
we put gas on the spark plug and nothing
we sprayed gas thru the carb and nothing
we sprayed starting fluid on the plug and nothing
we sprayed starting fluid thru the carb and nothing

what could it be? timing off possibly? how do you set the timing and the point on this little sucker?

I would find out what the model # was and get a service manual for it.

What is the compression you say is good?
A motor needs good compression, good spark at the proper time and the proper fuel to air ratio to fire the cylinder.
Too much fuel is just as bad as too little fuel for firing properly
