I have a 1979 Formula with a merc. 305 chev. it is very strong compression and turns by hand the way it should. I have changed the battery and cables and seliniod also had the starter rebuilt. I have checked the wires out only by eye.
NOW! The problem is the only thing that I get is a click by key and with a jumper on the starter I get a motor spin but not engaging. Can any body please tell me what I am not seeing here.
Just wondering about the breaker could it be bad. The one that sits on top of the engine.

THX for the help

Re: Engine start

what lugs are you using to jump the starter solenoid.you want the main battery cable lug and the small post closest to the engine ( should have an "S" on it.

Ayuh,... There ya Go,... There's the Problem... Welcome Aboard....

Remove, sand, clean, reinstall, 'n grease ALL the wiring ends...
That'll get corrosion outa the diagnosis...
and with a jumper on the starter I get a motor spin but not engaging.
Yer jumping the wrong 2 terminals...
Jumper the inside tiny terminal to the battery wire lug....
Make sure the coil is gettin' power...

Doubt it,...
A DVM or Testlight will tell ya...

Re: Engine start

Have you had the ignition switch tested? They do go bad now and again but everybody always buys a 200.00 starter first rather than a 15.00 igniton switch.. Beats the heck out of me why they don't test both before laying down the credit cards.
