I recently unbolted my '74 50hp evinrude power pilot from the hull for a touch up paint. Upon remounting though I've found that the shift lever won't come all the way back to neutral & therefore not reverse either.

The motor started fine before my diy tinkering but now it won't start at all. no crank, only the chocke click.......

It's got me beat as there was no playing with any power, ignition etc I just disconnected the housing from backing board, repainted & remounted it........

Any suggestions as to what might possibly be affecting the shift lever? I'm guessing that it won't fire because it's not shifting back to neutral........????

If you took the cables off of the mtr you could have them hooked up backwards. Just a thought.

Thanks for the thought....I didn't detatch any cables from either end which is why I'm baffled. I just took the front half housing off the power pilot, removed the 2 internal screws that hold the control box to the backing board, masked up to protect the internals then repainted & remounted. The only odd thing I found was that one lead had come off a connector (probably bumped by the screwdriver) but it clicked right back on again without issue.
