Went to change my tilt rams and lines today and one of the distribution blocks behind the gimbal stripped out. Tried all the tricks to save it when the old line was coming out but it was no use. Threads literally crumbled before my eyes. This is a 1972 Starcraft with "I believe* a Type 1 outdrive according to what people are telling me. 4 line setup for the rams with 2 blocks behind the gimbal. Two questions: 1) Do they still sell this distribution block? 2) Do I really need to pull the motor to fix this? I am no boat expert, I'm actually a car mechanic. I can't even see the back of these blocks so these leads me to believe I have some work ahead of me. Damn....

Re: Stripped...

Looks different than my 1973 with mercruiser 165. I'd recommend going to a boat salvage yard to look for parts and see how it is put together. Hope someone with one like yours offers suggestions. I replaced the inside lines on mine but they came out ok for me.

Re: Stripped...

Thanks for chiming in. Like I said, I'm not 100% on exactly what outdrive this is. Even the guy at the local marina was kind of confused when I gave him the serial and showed him pictures. The schematics he pulled up for my serial didn't match what was on my boat. Anyways, anyone have a setup like this and faced this problem?

That looks like an early MC I, with power trim and tilt. The connector block should be 22-36033, gasket 27-36043, nut 11-36084. dont know if they are still available call a merc dealer,I dont have that manual but im guessing they go through the transom plate and the trim hoses from the pump attach inside the boat, the engine might have to come out to change them. Good luck, Bill.

Usually you can get enough line from inside the boat to change the blocks w/o engine pulling. If you were changing the inside hoses it would be a crap shoot depending on your hull/engine mount config. Have done several inside hoses w/o engine pull but it is a PITA.

You are right on it man. I am going to local dealer today to see what I can do about it. I honestly can't even get my hand on the backside of this block inside the boat. I am guessing the motor will have to come out and it sucks because this was the last thing I needed to do to get the boat back in the water. Anything special about pulling a GM 120 4 cyl. to do this job? I have done many motors in cars but never a boat motor. Thanks for everyone's help, I appreciate it greatly.

Re: Stripped...

Ordered the block, gasket, and nut today at my local marina. Also got a new motor mount because mine was getting tired. Thanks for the part numbers they were all still good. Came to about $90. Now the question is how bad is it to remove the engine and outdrive? I assume I need to pull the outdrive first, and then the motor can come out? My manual doesn't go to in depth with this but then again I did just scan through it. Any advice people can give me would be greatly appreciated.

HeliCoil.

How do you Heli coil a flare fitting?

Yes you need to pull the drive to pull the engine, besides it will allow better access to the block. If you can pull a car engine you will find a boat way easier. front and rear mounts unplug the harness and a few other wires and hoses, not quite that simple but close. and realign after you are through. get the merc manual download from the stickies the best way to go. good luck Bill

Re: Stripped...

You can't helicoil a flare fitting, and besides there isn't enough room to get a drill or even a right angle drill in there to drill it out first. Looks like one more hurdle before this thing goes in the water!
