Now you know, always count turns to bottom, then when you put it back together you just run it all the way down then count your turns up and you are there.

Just curious. If you didn't count them is there any "rule of thumb"??

The 1977 115hp Evinrude/Johnson does not have a shift rod that screws into the lower unit. It has a shift rod with a screw on barrel like attachment at the top of the rod.... the barrel screws all the way down, then back it up until the flange of the barrel is facing forward.

What is the model number of that engine?
