My 8.1Gxi-AF has the 2 piece power steering setup. The pump is mounted at the engine and the reservoir is mounted on the transom. The pump is going bad and a replacement is $1,000. My question is can I convert to a traditional single unit pump/reservoir setup without hurting the performance of the steering. It's fully hydraulic right up to the steering column. Here's a couple pics of my setup now...also the outdrive is a DPX series with it's own unique set of steering rams.
