I was wondering if someone could help me with identifying my motors year. I recently purchased a 1988 bass tracker pontoon with I believe the original motor on it. I am trying to do some work on it and am having trouble with the serial number. I cannot read the whole number but I believe what I can see is it starts with OB3_595_ obviously the blanks are what I cant see. Can anyone help me out I have looked like crazy online and get conflicting years. Thanks

ragbul;

It would appear that the powerhead has been changed if you have a different number on the powerhead vs the transom clamp data plate.

Using the first s/n you posted B3_595_, for a 4 cyl. the numbers come up as a:

45 45 Classic 4-cyl 0B238644 0B393189 1988 USA
45 45 Classic 4-cyl 0B393190 0C159199 1989 USA

Using the s/n B257632 would put it in the same ranges above as a 45 Classic.

I can find nothing for 50 Classics s/ns starting with a letter until they get to four stroke engines.

Maybe somebody else has a better picture of this.

Where are you located?

Re: mercury classic 50 Question

Thanks, thats what I was thinking that its a new powerhead, on the original motor so if its a 1988 (which is what the boat is) or a 1989 I would assume most parts are going to be the same. I am wanting to rebuild the carbs and fuel pump and just looking for help on first identifying the motor it is a 50 classic 45 hp 4cyl. I appreciate the input, also I am in Lake Placid FL. I just have never had an outboard where the s/n was missing or damaged. Thanks
