You really really really need a factory service manual and a few basic tools to troubleshoot this so you don't end up spending hundreds of dollars replacing parts that may or may not be bad.
My engine acted like that and it turned out to be the timer base. HOWEVER, there are other things that could be wrong as well so don't rush out and buy a timer base just 'cause you read it on the internet. There are some specific tests you need to perform which are spelled out in the service manual to determine whether an ignition problem is because of the timer base, stator, power packs, or coils.
Check compression. Check for a good spark on each cylinder (using a spark tester set at 7/16"). If those check out ok it's always possible you've got dirty carbs.
