New to owning a boat and looking at buying a 20ft Stratos with 225 Merc EFI. Any known issues or problems that I need to be aware of or should be looking for before I purchase this? I have read a lot on forums and I am not seeing much other than the oil injection pump shaft gear being plastic and breaking.

There seems to be way more knowledgeable people on this forum than some I have been reading. Just a rookie Boater looking for Advise.

Re: Questions on 1996 Mercury 225 EFI

The 1995/96 models had problems with the CDM modules failing due to shoddy construction. Also the oil geatr is on bottom of crankshaft on a 3.0 liter and this have very few failures. The EFI is a more maintenance engine due to the numerous filters and fuel pressure spec's.

Are these the only two years of CDM modules that have this issue and from what Ive read these engines are the same up to 2001. If or when I have an issue can you use a newer more reliable module to remedy this issue?

Mercury and CDI electronics have the CDM update kits. The old CDM is shaped like the letter "D" and the ECU went from a analog to a digital in about 1998.
