Newbie needs good advise-Replacing lower unit!

I have a 1979 Evinrude 75 HP that got a cracked lower unit during the winter...I have now found a 1979 Evinrude 85 HP lower unit that I can buy...But I dont know anything about boats/motors and so Im asking for advise on this...First of all-Are the HP compatible? What things factor in? I really cant afford to buy a new lower unit so Im trying to find a cheap used one...Please help me out!!

Sorry but it will not fit for the following reasons: (1) wrong gear ratio (2) driveshaft splines are different . You need to find a unit off a 3 cylinder 50/60/70/75 hp from about 1976-1989 as these will have the 4 spline driveshaft.

Ok so a 85+ HP wont work but if I found a littler unit, lets jusy say a 70 HP then it should work? As long as the shaft is the same length?
