kicker too big?

Hello to all.
This is my first post, i could not find and introduction section. My question is i purchased a new 15hp 4stroke in 2009. I had about 10 hours on it when a tree fell and crushed my 14' john boat.
I looked for a boat without a motor for a wile and ended up buying a 16' crestliner with a new 40hp motor because it was a good deal.
Now i want to use the 15 as a kicker with a prop guard and use them individually.
Is that to much weight? Should i sell the 15 and buy a smaller motor?
The boat will hold 1300lbs. Its 340lbs with 2 motors.
Advise would be greatly apreciated.

What kinda 16' Crestliner are we talkin' about here? A deep V should be fine with that kicker. If it's another jon, that might be pushing it.

If we're talkin' something like this:

then that sounds like too much weight back there.

Something like this:

would be a different story

Re: kicker to big?

What HP is the hull rated for....is the current 40 at the top or bottom of the rating?

Many 15HP motors are the same as the 9.9s, so weight may not be that much of an issue.

I have a 15.5 foot aluminum boat with 90HP and 8Hp on it, plus its a tiller, so my 220 lbs is sitting back there too...works fine.

Yours might too, a pic would be great.

ondarvr, is your 8 a four stroke? The OP's 15 is and I bet it's quite heavy.

Its the boat in the center.
The hull is rated for 40 and that is what the big one is (225lbs). The 15hp is a 2009 4 stroke (115lbs).
If the 15 is to large what size should i get?
I use the boat on a large river and the current can get pretty strong.
Here is a shot of it.

The weight on the following new kicker motors are:
6hp 55lbs
8 and 9hp 84lbs
15hp (my motor) 115lbs.
Should i sell my 15 and buy a 6?
Thanks

I see no reason to have a kicker at all on a boat with a 40, or on a 16' boat. what are you trying to accomplish?

What do you need the kicker for..trolling?
You may not need it,unless your thinking a backup/spare.

I fish in a couple different spots. One of the places is below a Dam and the water level changes constantly. All large rock bottom for a few miles but certain times of the year that is wear all the fish are. The 40 has a power trim and I don't want to destroy a new motor. I used the 15 on the river with a prop protector and wanted to fish the same spot with the new boat.

No, its a 2 stroke, but I have a 90 tiller as the main motor and I weigh 220, that probably trumps the kicker.

I'd stick it on there and see what happens before doing anything else.

Consider a jack plate, then.
Is it feasible to put a "prop protector" on the 40?
Is it feasible just to swap the motors when you go to the shallow area?

what about a electric motor that would solve your problem you and it would be cheaper. you could mount it bow or stern and that would move you around good.
