I am having issues with a 2004, 150HP Johnson outboard, 2 cycle. It will idle fine but as soon as I put it into gear and try to give it gas it will die. I can flutter the throttle in neutral it will sometimes go. I checked all the fuel lines and the pickup in the tank and all seam to be fine. I replaced the ball, it sometimes seems soft. It seems to be running rich.

Could it be the ignition module? Need to rebuild the carbs?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

why do you think it is running rich? if all plugs are firing i really doubt it is the ignition module. bot definitely worth checking that you have spark (good spark) on all plugs. from my exp hesitation from idle on a two stroke almost invariably is lean mix on low speed. what happens if you just put it into gear and dont give it gas? will it idle in gear at that point? can you very slowly increase throttle at that point and get it to go? as far as the ball is concerned as long as it will get hard before start it is expected to get soft as it runs. does pumping the bulb help any with the operation of the engine while it is running? not familiar with the 2004s... (cant afford one lol) are the carbs adjustable for fuel air mix on low and or high speed? mildly surprised that in 04 it wasn't fuel injected.

Hello,I have the same engine, I used to have that problem. I took it to a johnson mech. He change a sensor for the speed. ( no idea) and fixed the problem for good.
