i have a merc 888 188 that has a problem where the coil overheats and engine quits. have replaced coil and problem persists. i inherited this problem with the boat. The coil was replaced with merc marine coil. This is the 3rd coil The second was a automotive accel coil. It got so hot it began to leak oil.

Re: coil overheat

Measure the voltage at the coil.Should be 9v.If it's more then put in a ballast resistor. About $10,J

Re: coil overheat

As above, guessing your resistor wire is fried. You can run a straight wire and replace the coil with one that has an internal resistor.
