I have a 26' Cheetah Fastcat Deckboat, powered by a Mercrusier 383, Bravo 1 outdrive, 22 pitch 4-blade prop. The boat runs really well but it has a misfire and popping noise from the exhaust. It is most prominent when under a load, especially when coming out of the hole or towing a wakeboarder/skier.
Last season I experienced this problem. I took the boat to a local Mercruiser certified mechanic. He plumbed the drive with water and plugged in the laptop. Ran the boat through the series of tests, found no error codes or problems. He could not duplicate what I described. So we did the normal service, fluids, filters, gear oil etc. Pulled the plugs for a compression test, all cylinders read around 150ish. Plugs #2 & #5 looked slightly different than the others on the leaner side. We changed the plugs and plug wires and decided to go and run it....
Nothing changed!!
I took the boat back to the mechanic, we plugged it in the computer again and it showed no error codes or problems, again. We took the fuel injection system off, cleaned and flow tested it and put it back on. Plugged the computer back in and were not able to duplicate the problem. Even while increasing the rpm's slightly with water plumbed to it, nothing seems to be showing up on the computer.
I am just short of pulling the motor, purchase a new one and drop it in.
I am sure someone has had similar issues/experiences as mine. If you have any advice I could use a pick-me-up....
