I have a 1982 bayliner with a aq 125 and a 270 outdrive went out to day to fish and it made it about 1/2 a mile and slowly died spiting and sputtering as it did.Tryed and tryed to start it again and it would run some would get about 30 feet and the same prob.the temp was at just a bit over 180.
Get the boat home and it runs great for 30 minutes in gear and out of gear, temp looked to be the same as on the water. What could it be ?
Oh and the carb was just rebuilt. And i did have a small motor in the bout that may have been on the gas line but it looked like to much gas not a lack of it.

Re: aq 125 prob runs a bit but not long

I am not sure if this ia a fuel prob or ignition? It ran great for20 minutes till it was good and warmed up then killed.Would have to sit15 to 20 minutes then it would start but only for a short time and then kill again.Any help would be appreciated.
Could the coil or condenser do this?
Also when this happened I had the flame arrestor off and the carb would pump gas when i pushed the throtle forword as it should but still would not start untill it sat.i took off the top off the carb and the bowl was full.
If any one has any input to help with this I would be very greatfull.
This is the best place I have found to get good answers.

Hi Robert, welcome!!!

I would start with a full tune up if you haven't done one recently. This is preventative maintenance and could help eliminate the ignition side from the problem or perhaps fix your problem all together. On the fuel side, you may have water in your fuel which will definitely cause issues. If you do not have a fuel/water separating filter, I would recommend installing one. You could hook the engine up to a remote gas can and run the boat to see if it is the a fuel quality/source issue, but that may be more work than draining the tank and installing the new filter like I suggested.

Good luck too you. Make sure you follow up and let us know how it goes.:)

Update I have put a rebuild kit in carb,coil,points.condenser,roter.cap and am still having problems with it it will run fine at idle but when i try to give it gas it will stall at about 1400too1600 rpm's but if i pump it can get it to run at faster rpm's.I am not sure but I think it is a fuel issue in the carb.If anyone has any input I would be greatfull to have it Im knew to boat motors but have worked on alot of car and truck motors and the boats are much harder to tune in.Thanks to anyone that can help.

Did you set the point dwell? not just gap, dwell? Did you set the timing? dwell effects timing. Did you adjust idle mixture? and I don't mean the initial turns out shown in the manual. That is just a starting point. Do you allow the engine to get up to operating temperature before testing? do you get gas out of the J tube when you operate the throttle linkage?

It all has to work together in those engines or it won't run right. You did check the compression didn't you. if the compression is no good, nothing else will work.

Don i have set the dwell its at 62 and the timing is set at 10 I just did a compression test and i had 130 110 118 125 motor was cold as i cant run it the fuel line hole in the carb has a crack on the top of it and fuel startes spraying all over so I need a new carb or top plate to go any farther. But the compression has Me wondering if I just have a worn out motor??Is this compression too low to run properly?
Thanks Don for taking the time to look at the post I appreciate youre input.

boat runs great now.put coil, condenser, points, cap, plugs, wires, fuel water seperator, and a newer carb with a fresh kit in it.so about 300 in parts and a days work and it runs great.set the timing by the specs in the manual and the carb also.Have had the boat out 5 or 6 times on all day trips and not one prob .Thanks to all that post here and the folks that give answers that are usable not just another question!!!
