When I replaced the seal on my lower shift rod, I neglected to remember how it was oriented before I pulled it out. Looking from the top down, I have it so it can turn between 10 oclock and 12 oclock. Is that correct?IMG_5196.jpg

Re: Gen2 lower shift rod alignment

We'll say 12 (facing fwd) will be forward gear. 11 should be neutral and 10 will be reverse. Turn the prop some when you shift it to fwd... you will feel it. Make sure to apply some pressure to the prop to hold it in gear. You might have to apply more pressure, if the vertical shaft won't align, to turn the shaft while you are reinstalling the lower half. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for your help. I can feel it shift in both directions, so hopefully I'll be good when it is all back together. This is my first time maintaining the outboard, and it mostly hasn't been too hard.

Instead of hoping it's OK, with it still off the boat, turn the ujoint shaft in the direction of engine rotation while shifting fwd, neutral, and reverse and watch the prop shaft. Then you will know if it works BEFORE you put it back on the boat.
