Drive Shaft upper o ring

I just replaced the impeller in my 1968 33hp Johnson and the upper o ring on the drive shaft rod was missing. I put a new o ring on it, but not having the old one, it may not be exactly the same as the O.E. ring. What will happen if the o ring is incorrect or missing?

you will get water up in the bearing and rust things up.get the correct oring and lightly grease the splines on the shaft and oring.
