I’ve read several post that mention gear problems with 1998 through 2001 V6 gearcases from OMC. My OMC mechanic says this is BS. Does anybody know for sure? I need a new lower unit and my dealer has a new one for about what a rebuilt will cost but I’m afraid that the new one might be a leftover with the problem gears. But if not I would rather have a new one then a rebuilt one.

Only if he and the Bomb warranty it for a year, in writing from The Bomb.

Their gear problems are, unfortunately, pretty well known. Your dealer can get the good gears from Pro Marine (800-621-7761)or Outboard Recycle (334-645-2050). OB Recycle also has complete units with the good gears.

When installing your new or rebuilt unit, stick with the Bombardier water pump kit.

Good luck!

Pro Marine also stocks the good (013) style OMC pump kits.

Good luck!

I agree with your mechanic.... That's B.S.!!!! OMC's gears may be more $$$$$ than the aftermarket ones, but they are NOT inferior to the aftermarket ones.....
