Outdrive Play?

Quick question...<br /> How much play (ie. wiggle back and forth) should I be able to feel when shaking the entire outdrive unit back and forth by hand? Should there be any? Is this indicative of another problem? Seals, O-rings? I am talking about a Volvo 270, on a trailer, of course. Thanks

This is a little seat of the pants for me. I had two outdrives and compared them. Both were working fine but on one if I held the prop tight and turned the driveshaft I could trun the shaft about 1/2 inch back and forth. I tired the other and got less than a 1/4 inch. My opinion is the first has too much play. I am going to rework it latter.. hope that helps

I know what you are talking about. It will move back and forth (like when turning the boat) a little bit. My (270) will do the same thing. I bet it is slack in the steering cable. As long as it is not to much there isn't a problem. Any none new outdrive will have some play if it was put together to tight it wouldn't move.
