Hello kmazzucchi,

Welcome aboard!!

I moved this over to the OMC I/O section as we try to keep the boat section free of engine topics.

Maybe a pic with arrows to what you're talking about would help. I'm not sure what you're referring to exactly.

those are just drain holes - so water doesn't pool in the swivel area and freeze

those are called tattle tale holes they tell you your impeller and cooling system is functioning correctly

Re: omc 3.8 v6 identifying a hole

the only tattle tale on a stringer drive is in the intermediate pointing at the ball gears to lube/cool them with water (after 1980 "ish"- only later drives)
there is a water relief hole little further forward on the lower unit that will make a pee stream on the muffs with municipal water pressure, but is no indication of impeller function or condition
but the hole OP pictured is just at the swivel area of the exhaust housing - no water pressure there

howard,
so you're saying no water should come out when only muffs are on?..there is water making it through because water is making it way up and out right where the drive meets with back of boat. Is there an actual pee hole besides the one by the muffs? AND THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP

Re: omc 3.8 v6 identifying a hole

water is free to come out that hole, but there is no tattle tale or pee hole on inboard outboard engines, only on some outboard motors

turn water on full, wait for it to start pouring out the grate in the zinc on the underside of the intermediate, and some through the prop
start the engine
