dad did it again...found a mercruiser 440

i am looking to replace the 3.0 in my boat and dad has found a mercruiser 440 (that is what it says on the valve cover). he says that it looks just like the 87 3.0 181cid that is in my boat now (it does have the alpha 1 out drive). he called me up to see if i thought the 440 would swap out with my 3.0. i told him that i didnt know for sure but i know where i can find out. the reason y i am swaping out the 3.0 is due to a non winterizing job that the previous owner did with out informing me and prior to my schooling on boats thanks to this forum. so for the questions...

what is the 440? is it mercruiser's own motor or a gm based?
will any of it interchange with my 3.0?
can the hole thing be swaped out and still work on my alpha 1?
is the motor worth the trouble or getting?
someone please school me here on the 440 and thanks so much on all the information i am learned on here

Are you sure it is not a "140" instead of a "440"?

Ayuh,... There ain't no 440 Merc...

If it's a 470, you don't want it...
If it's a 140, it'll swap in...

There is a 440 merc but probably not what he's talking about. It's a '83-'86 454 440cyclone.

ok guys i just got off the phone with dad. he is going back over tonight (i think and hope) to use his phone and get pictures dont know what kind of quality they will be as dad can run a camera but i when it come to the one in his phone i am not fo sure on. lol....ya got oto love SOME of todays technoledge (spell check)

ok dad went back and looked it over again, broke the windex and a rag out and cleaned the decal off and she is a 140. will i have an issue swapping her out with mine? mine is a 181 3.0 1987 model.

If you're going to pay money for this engine, I would suggest you pressure check the cooling system before you buy it or you might just end up with the same problem.........
