stuck in reverse

My 1979 25hp Johnson is stuck in reverse and will not shift out of gear, not sure whats going on can anyone help me out not sure where to start

Whats been done to it lately? Water pump impeller, changed the gear oil?
Is this a manual (tiller) shift or a remote (cable) shift setup ?

Just changed the oil and it is a tiller model

nope, it was working fine and jammed in reverse while on the lake today, was a long ride back to the ramp.

I was thinking that either the phillips head screw (pivot pin) was misaligned, or the shift rod coupler was undone. You might take off the little access plate on the side and check to see if the coupler's come undone.

The throttle must be all the way down to idle before it will shift. Built in safety....

tx1961whaler it was the shift rod coupler problem solved thankyou so much, I thought this was going to be a major tear down, i over looked the simple checks. Thanks again
