Please help

I have am 03 merc 20hp. My friend gave it to me with the lower unit disassembled. I put a new water pump, fuel pump and rebuilt the carb. I headed down to the lake and it started fine (one pull) Idled perfectly, Starts to accelerate but wont open all the way up. Any ideas??

Did you do a link/sync/timing.Will need the manual for that.

I thought that was only with multiple carbs. I haven't check the timing yet.

link and synch is for single or multi carb.
what you are trying to do with link and synch is to have your timing in the right spot in relation to the carbs opening. this assures your engine will have proper fuel and spark in the right ratio and the right time... aka optimum operation.

Before getting all wrapped up in link&sync, why not check to make sure the throttle plate in the carb is opening all the way. It should be perfectly horizontal with the throttle set wide open. Is the engine actually running on all cylinders.

Hey thank you for your help. It was the spark plug on the second cylinder. Got it all timed. I see what you are talking about. Thanks again.
