Americans have less than three weeks to block a federal regulation that would change the calendar so that the first day of April would always fall on a Monday.
Ostensibly, this move by the Federal Trades Committee is for the purpose of increasing production and promoting public safety by granting a long weekend to workers in states where April 1st is observed as a public holiday. However, many people see it as just another blatant attempt by the federal government to usurp the powers and rights guaranteed to the various states by our founding fathers when this great nation was first formed.
Stanley Stanbach , Liberarian Party acting national executive director pro tempore, says that In addition to this unjustified, unethical and unconstitutional power grab by the government, this kind of senseless regulation can only lead to the commercialization of another one of our sacred holidays.
"If you don't think it can happen, just look at what has already happened to Christmas and Easter" says Stanbach.
"Conservatives who cheer states' rights should realize this is a slam-dunk decision," Stanbach said. "The Constitution gives the federal government no authority whatsoever to meddle with our calendar much less make a change of such magnitude and importance without consulting the people most directly affected by this asinine proposal - the American taxpayer.
Stanbach noted that the prestigious American Association of Calendar Developers and Producers is also fighting the regulation, which the group says would "guarantee chaos in our places of work, in our homes and in our schools as the public tries to cope with the nullification of centuries of calendrical tradition".
The Liberarian Party is urging all Americans to write, call or send an e-mail to their Congressional representatives urging them to co-sponsor a House resolution that would block this new rule. The measure, HJR 382AB, sponsored by U.S. Rep. Ron Tompaliczak, R-Texas, declares that the rules "shall have no force or effect and our calendar will remain the same as it is today throughout eternity."
