just rebuilt my 1998 150 mercury 2 stroke carb, and had an issue with it when i got on the water. pulled the head off and found the piston ring cracked in the cylinder i just repaired. any idea on what would of caused this. when i first cranked it up on the trailer after the rebuild i initially had the flywheel on wrong ( i know no need for jokes please! lol) and it did alot of popping and backfiring. cause this cause the cracked ring? it was not cracked at time of installation

Damaged on install, rough edge on a port, lost a locating pin.

It's something you did or didn't do when you built it.

That's not a flippant remark. The fact the flywheel was out of time shows that you aren't even using the right tools and procedures for the simple stuff. It should have come off at the hub spline with a Mercury flywheel removal tool, and there'd be now way to put it on out of time.
