Having trouble with my 1968 18hp Evinrude Fastwin. It runs when I squeeze the primer bulb but dies out when I stop. I changed the fuel lines, clamps, and cleaned the filter screen on the fuel pump. After it runs for a second the gas flows back into the tank. I figure it to be that the fuel pump needs replacing. I am having difficulty finding a replacement fuel pump and the only number on it is 312631 which I think is just a casting number. Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: 18hp Evinrude Fuel Pump?

The primer bulb has a check valve that should keep any fuel past the bulb from flowing back to the tank. Don't know if that would cause it to die after pumped until bowl is full.. It looks like a faulty fuel pump. They are rebuildable, just not by me! I call timsoutboard.com and buy a used/good one for 1/2 the price of new. They usually have 'em on hand. Have the model number of your motor ready when you call. They are pretty standard through the years. Good luck!
