okay, i just got done replacing the ignition switch in my 1979 MerControl for same year 115 inline 6. I have a problem though, a leftover wire in the harness that is not used anymore. The way i have it wired is as follows...

Harness.....switch........use
red............red...........battery power
black.........black.........ground
gray......yellow/black...choke
yellow...yellow/red......solenoid
orange..black/yellow....short/kill
N/A........purple...........ignition circuit (acc.)
white?....??????..........???????

THe white wire from the engine harness is the wire that i cannot figure what it does. THe motor turns over fine, and there are no extra wires on the switch (6 wire switch). Does anyone know what is up?

the White wire is pin "F" in this diagram. my harness does not have pin "F". Since my motor was the first year for CD electronic igntion, i think mercury just used the same harnesss from previous years, and this wire is not needed at all for my motor. Thanks

yes, Merc used the white wire for switched +12VDC power. This was needed for the early 1979 and earlier inline sixes and fours that had Battery-powered CDI Ignition and distributors.
