I have a 1974 6 hp Johnson mounted on my Grumman Sportboat (15 ft, 115# canoe/boat). The motor has been tuned by the local marina shop and is equiped with a standard three blade prop. With a 400# load (two adults + gear) I can only muster 8 mph, as measured by GPS. We are at 4500 ft elevation. I would think that I could get more speed out of this combination. Any thoughts or suggestions?

The 6's are not much of a performer. Reliable as heck but only 6 HP.

You may try adjusting the trim. That would be the notches where the mid section rests.

I also think 4500 feet elevation is affecting the performance.

Plus, your boat isn't a performance boat - it's a canoe hybrid. With that sort of load, it's going through the water... water slows you down.

For that amount of weight and the size of boat, I think you're doing good. :D
