Oil Drain Kit

Wanted to see if I could get some advice. I'm looking at buying an oil drain kit from Overtons. This is the hose that connects to the bottom of your oil pan and is left in place. I believe you run the hose out your bilge drain hole when you wish to drain your oil. First, has any one used one of these? Does it work well, worth the money? Second, not sure what size drain pan bolt I have. I have a 97 Volvo Penta 5.7(GM) 350 in the boat. Overtons site says the 96 and newer chevy 350 should use the 12mm x 1.75 thread size bolt. But theres also a 1/2 x 20 that says its for GM engines. Anyone know what size drain bolt my engine should have?

Thanks

Re: Oil Drain Kit

I bought the same kit for my 454.

They sent me the wrong one the first time. I did get the right one eventually. The fitting and hose were too big to fit through the bilge drain though.

It doesn't matter. I don't have the patience to wait for it to drain via gravity.

So I clamped the other end of the hose to my port riser and when I want to drain the oil, I use a Moeller vacuum pump to suck it out through the hose.......It works great!

Cheers,

Rick

I like that set up in my boat, Yeah its a little slower, but works and I dont have to store another tool. Yepper, run it out the drain plug hole into a bucked, drain pan or whatever

If you run the engine for 5 minutes first, the oil heats up just enough and drains much faster.

I am surprised you don't already have the hose fitting at the top of the dipstick tube to suck the oil out. Doesn't your dipstick already go down to the bottom drain of the pan?

The newer pumps don't even use the fitting anymore. They supply a slightly smaller O.D. tubing that just goes down the dipstick. Drains it in about 5 minutes.

The pumps I have use the fitting. Way easier to pump that way because the diameter of the dipstick tube is way bigger than the ID of tube you put down through the dipstick. I just bought a new powered pump setup and it comes with the hose fitting. The oil doesn't even have to be warm that way.

In any case, the OP should already have the dipstick tube going to the bottom of the pan so a new kit would actually be removing his dipstick tube.

Yeah, same here... The fitting is like .000000005" too big to fit through the garboard drain  I cobbled up a couple brass fittings that will go out the garboard drain, but it makes draining the oil even slower

Eh, it's not like I'm in a huge hurry when changing the oil anyway......

I was unable to find a bilge drain large enough for the hose to fit through.
