How do I get the shift (control) cable off the shift plate - Merc 5.7 EFi/Bravo III?

Greetings

This must be a real noob question but it has me stumped.

I am trying to remove the shift cable from the bracket on the engine.

It is held by a locknut - (10) in the picture - which is threaded onto a stud on the shift bracket. However, when I try to loosen the nut, the stud just rotates, and there is nowhere to hold it so it won't rotate.

Am I missing something super trivial or is the thing broken? I am pretty sure I tried both directions in case it was left threaded but it was late last night...

That locknut is supposed to come off while the stud stays in place. If the stud is turning, then your only real option is to keep turning it till the stud screws out completely. Just be sure to remove the end as well so it doesn't get in a bind.
