Hello everyone! I recently purchased a 1985 Bayliner Capri with the aq125/270 penta. last season, started hearing a noise (which sounded like a rod knock) but comming from bell housing. well, being a auto mechanic I knew this didnt sound good, so I took her home. Well it sat all winter and now that its spring Ive started digging into it! I took off the upper unit thinking it was the u-joints. Well, they arent "that bad" (but I will still replace). While removing the upper unit, the drive shaft came out with it and I found what remains of a bearing. I can see a smaller bearing further in the bell housing which looks good and dry. no water got beyond that last seal. Im trying to figure out how to replace that bearing on the drive shaft. I can see the race still in the housing along with 2 snap rings. The other part of the bearing (race) is still on the shaft with another snap ring. It looks like I can just take off the race and snap ring off the drive shaft with now problem, but I cant figure out how to get the new bearing back in the housing. Im guessing I just need to take out the snap rings, remove the old race and re-install??? and one last thing, do I need to remove the yoke from the upper unit to replace the u-joints? Thanks in advance. Ive worked on cars all my life, just new to boating and I really dont want to mess it up :)

Re: Penta 270, replaceing the drive shaft bearing

Welcome. If the outer race still fits the flywheel cover, and the drive shaft isn't too beat up, I'd do like you say and pull the snap rings and replace the bearing. Install the bearing on the driveshaft and tap it into place. You will not be able to replace the inside flywheel grease seal unless you pull the motor. If that's all it takes, your lucky.

You do not have to remove the yoke, but I've never tried. I removed it when I changed mine.

thats what I was thinking. Im thankful the inner oil seal looks good :) there is no rust/water behind it and it looks good. The drive shaft looks good to, just has the old bearing race still on it. Next weekend I'll clean everything out and remove the old race. Looks like all I'll need is the bearing, the one seal, u-joints and bellow. Do i just change the u-joints like any other?

yep, like any other.

Make sure to let us know how it goes.

Don't forget to order new orings for the upper gear box install, and new orings for the fill and drain plugs.

Re: Penta 270, replaceing the drive shaft bearing

ok, so I took the upper unit to work and removed the drive shaft from the ujoint assy with ease :) old bearing race came off clean with no scoring! I think I got lucky here BIG TIME. Now to find the parts "somewhat" cheap. Im having a hard time finding the drive shaft bearing (intermediate). any help? I have the AQ125. I found the ujoints and bellows already.

yes, this way you do not have to pound on the bearings. Using a pipe, the right size to go around the drive shaft and tap the bearing inner race onto the shaft, then using another size, big enough to tap the outer race into the flywheel housing. This is just my shadetree method. Someone may have a better way.

Here's the parts breakdown showing the driveshaft, bearings etc.

ok, I finally was able to get the old bearing race out of the housing. It was seized in the housing pretty tight. I cleaned everything up good, now I can order everything I need. I'll let you know when everythings back together. hopefully next weekend

Success!!! All went back together perfect. Its amazing how quiet it is now. No loud knocking noise comming from the bell housing. Bearing=20.00, snap rings=4.00, u-joints=40.00, outer grease seal=7.00 water bellow=45.00, ready to hit the lakes this summer=PRICELESS!! (well, not priceless with 4.06 a gallon, but close :)
