3.0L No Restart - Battery Drain

1991 Dynasty Elan 181, 3.0L Mercruiser, Alpha One...Boat sat for 3 years...rebuild Carb., New Battery...<br /><br />With full charge, engine starts immediately and runs good...once the engine is off it will not restart...battery seems to be too weak or drained...after another full charge it starts immediately. This occurs with engine running anywhere from 15 seconds to 5 minutes...Please help!

check your alternator if it's charging your battery.

starter could be corroded up. wire connections could also need cleaning and tightning. get a vom. check battery voltage during start up and then when boat starts. alternator should send ~14+ volts to battery. sitting battery has 12-12.5 volts. if it drops down 8-9 during start, could be a bad 'new' battery. and check timing.

Does anyone know how many amps the starter should be pushing/pulling...had the starter tested at auto place and it was off his meter at over 22 amps...
