I have a 33 horsepower evinrude that when I squeeze the bulb it will shoot gas out of the front of the carb. instead of pumping up like it should. any suggestions on what to look for. the carb. was rebuilt about a year ago, but the flywheel had turned out of alignment and the motor did not get a spark. the person that i bought the motor off of did not know what to look for and let it sit for a long time with old gas in it. The motor will start if I just pump it a couple of times, but won't run very long. Any suggestions on how to fix would be appreciated.

Wlcome to ibaots.

Sounds like your float needles aren't seating so you need to tear the carbs apart again and clean them up, if they have sat for a year with gas in them they could easily be clogged again.

Do one carb at a time and make sure you get all the jets and of coarse the float needles.

You need to actually remove and clean the jets by hand, don't know your engine but there should be a jet top front of carb, one back top of carb and the main behind the float bowl drain.

Now would be a good time to replace all your fuel line also from the tank to the carbs, old fuel line will plug a carb in no time, also an inline filter is a good idea to help keep things clean.

Yup - float may be out of adjustment or not floating so gas is constantly flowing. I usually don't rely on what the PO tells me about what they've done to the motor. That said, I'd get a carb kit WITH float and rebuild it. Not sure what you mean about flywheel turned out of alignment?? The flywheel only goes on one way. The only way it could be out of alignment is if the key was sheared or missing.

Also, be sure the carb is venting to atmosphere. Should be a hole in the front or side of the carb that leads directly to the upper bowl chamber and you can blow air through it when disassembled. If it's clogged, pumping the bulb just pushes fuel through the main jet, as the float can't rise enough to close it's valve. Learned that one after lots of head scratching! :)
