I have a 77 Johnson stinger it idles fine and runs great when it decides to. When you start it up it hits like a brand new engine. I usually let it idle for a while to warm up. When it is at low steed it is as smooth as can be but when you try to speed up it runs at half speed not even enough to get the boat on plane. After running that way sometimes up to 10 minutes you will here a pop or click sound and then it takes off like a bullet. Once it's running it will run all day as long as you don't stop the boat. If you stop it will do it again.:mad:Where should I start with this problem and how hard are outboard carbs to rebuild as compared to auto. I need this boat to last about three more years, was buying a new one but another son is on the way. Another reason to get the new boat right!!! Thanks for any help

Check your timer base linkage and throttle linkage on the mtr to make sure it is moving freely. Have the mtr off, drop in gear by spinning prop, and quickly advance the throttle and watch your linkage to make sure it goes to full advance.
