Do you need to take the powerhead off the mid section to change the head gasket on a 1973 johnson 50hp. does anyone know the sequence how they are tighten and the torque of the bolts. i notice the 4 bolts that bolts down the powerhead to the mid section. thanks

Re: Question about changing a head gasket

There is no need to remove the powerhead, simply remove the cylinder head. Torque the head bolts 18 to 20 foot pounds in the following sequence, starting with #1 bolt to #2 bolt etc.

9....10
5.....6
1.....2
4.....3
8.....7

the buttom bolts are in the lower crowl not letting you get a socket in there. but a enough room for a wrench.

That normally takes a special adapter to the torque wrench.

However, use a regular box wrench to tighten those last two, using the feel of the torqued bolts as a guide. I've done that many times without encountering any problems.
