broke throttle lever replacement

I have a 1987 procraft boat with 110 johnson vro outboard. My throttle lever broke off at the "circle" end. How hard is it to open control box and replace lever? ( I have new lever). Should I just take it to shop and have them do it? If so, estimated cost? Or, should I replace entire control box and cables? and again, cost?

My preference would be to just replace the lever myself. A boat repair guy told me the levers break because the cables get old and stiff. Even so, after spending 70 bucks for a new lever, I would like to get a couple of years service out of it.

Look forward to your reply.
Thanks

Re: broke throttle lever replacement

Correction --> It was the small choke / fast idle lever that broke, not the large forward/neutral/reverse lever. Sorry for confusion

It is not difficult to take the control apart then you can see what you need to do. It is a little tricky reassembling. You may need to move the idle lever a little to engage the cam. Don't try to force the cases together. If the idle cam and lever are in alignment the cases go together easily.
