The shift linkage needs to be disconnected. There's an oval plate on the side of the exhaust housing held on by two screws. Remove the screws and the plate and you should see the shift coupler under there. Remove the bottom screw in the coupler and the lower end (with the shift rod) should come out.

Welcome to iboats.

You have to disconnect the shift rod to let the lower unit come off fully. There will be an access door on the side of the leg, about 1x2, take that off, then you will see the shift rod, connected with a coupler. Remove the bottom screw in the coupler, and the lower unit will drop. Put a couple of the bolts back in to take up the slack, disconnect the shift rod, then drop the gearcase.

If you need help with the water pump install let us know.

Dang. Is that the protocol? You Vice Admirals. You're all the same! Us Rear Admirals are still learning the ropes!
