I have a 1984 Mercury 60 (S/N 06429362).
I went to change the lower end gear oil (Like I do every year) this morning and when I pulled the drain plug, I was greeted with about an ounce of water, a bad smell, and not a whole lot (About 4 ounces) of gear oil.
There was VERY little play (If any) side to side or front to back in the shaft. So, I feel everything is fine but I want to make sure.
This lead to my questions:
1. What is the best way to check for gear/bearing damage.
2. Do I have to remove the bearing carriage to replace the seal.
Thanks in advance for any & all help!!!
