Ive cleaned the carbs and cleaned and set my points and im getting a explosion out of the bottom of the lower unit sparatically but it doesn't seem to want to turn over. please help
I assume that the engine is turning over (starter cranking engine over) but it simply isn't starting. If the explosion you speak of sounds like a shotgun going off (firing directly out the exhaust), the engine is out of time.
Did you have the timing belt off? Is this ignition the "Magneto" type or "Automotive" type ignition?
Yes it is cranking. I did have the timing belt off, and its an automotive type i think (the coil wire comes out of the distributor beside the park plug wires and down to the coil). Yes the explosion is like a shotgun going off out of the exhaust.
Sounds like your timing is off seeing you had the belt off. If I had it in front of me I could set the belt timing for you. Hopefully Joe R will chime in here and tell you how to do it.
Boobie..... Actually it's not a bulletin, I've no idea why I stated "bulletin". It's the various pages from the service manual. If you don't have them and would like to have them, PM with your email address and I'll send them to you.
Thanks a lot Joe, but if I ever have to work on one of them again I'm sure it will come back. I know what to do, but can't explain it on here. Thanks again.
thank you so much! That did the trick. now that i have a runnin engine time to swap the lower units. Do you know if my 1960 johnson 75hp V4SL-12 lower unit with extension will interchange with the lower unit on the 1963 johnson V4AL-15E electric shift?
yeah i know, i've pulled the lower units off of both. the electric wiring i can't get pulled through the access point on the side where the plate with two screws comes off.
If you're speaking of installing the electric shift lower unit, remove that inner side plate, pull the shift wire thru using a string or flexible wire as a snake, spray the inner plate and the shift wire lobes with WD40 as a lubricant, then reinstall the inner plate.
