trouble starting cold 9.9 1985

Can not start my 9.9 johnson when it is cold but it will start with starting fluid. Once it is hot it will start fine. PLease help so I dont have to keep using starting fluid.

first of all; quit using that starter fluid ! No lubrication in it and you are likely to ruin the engine, try spraying 50:1 gas mix and see if it will work. Sounds like you need a good carb rebuild to begin with. Good luck!

Try advancing the throttle a bit faster. If everything else is OK, this may solve your problem. They will start if set faster but refuse if slower. Your linkage may be out of adjustment in relationship to what the indicator is showing on the handle, or the carb roller to timing plate cam may need adjustment.

If the choke lever was installed upside down, it will not fully close the choke butterfly. I know this from experience! :)
