I have a 1974 johnson 50 hp and am wonering if it is okay to use dexron III transmission fluid in the LU? The manual recommends SeaLube Gearcase Oil or dextron transmission fluid by gm. Have poured over other posts looking for an answer to no avail. Had an extra bottle of tranny fluid so I threw it in and am now second guessing myself because every post I see says to use gearcase oil. Will this hurt the LU, if so, what lube is comparable to the Sea Lube, or is the dexron III acceptable? Thanks in advance.

Re: gearcase oil

The manual was printed almost 40 years ago, since then they have improved the oils a little bit. If it is a mechanical shift you should use bombardiers hpf gear oil. If it is electric shift use type c.

Re: gearcase oil

The oil to use in your hydraulically assisted shifting gearcase is called Premium Blend, made by BRP Evinrude. Years ago is was called Type C.
