I'm responding to your PM here so that everyone can benefit.
I have never purchased a used motor that did not need the things mentioned above. Dirty carb problems can cause a variety of problems that will show up in many forms. You can't properly diagnose a motor with a dirty carb. You save a lot of headache for $30 in parts. So I don't know if that's your problem but unless it has been done lately it needs it. The instructions are pretty straightforward and carbs are simple things. Just get a clean work bench and when you think you have the carb clean, do it again. We'll be here is you need any other help.
