A 8.9 quake by Japan is sending a estimated 7ft. wave to the west coast. The tsunami is expected to hit Washington by 11 am EST Friday and continue to move down the coast. If your boat is on the west coast, it would be a good idea to take it out to sea!!!!!!

Tsunami warnings are issued for the entire Pacific in places as far away as South America, Canada, Alaska and other parts of the U.S.

Be Safe....Prayers sent!

True. On land, the Tsuanmi waves can be 5-10'. Out at sea, it's a 1' roller. You'll probably never even know it passed.

Just a word of Caution.......A Tsunami wave can intensify over the distance, take necessary precautions.

Or dissipate....it is a fairly tough one to predict accurately.

Check the news (CBS) videos of boats breaking loose and banging into others in California.

I guess you don't have to know how to tie a know to own a boat.

Springs, stays, WTH you talkin' about.

If anyone is interested, here is a link to NOAA wave monitoring system called DART. It is supposed to give real time readings on wave data. http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/dart.shtml

My Mom is wintering in Newport Beach here. Her place is maybe 5 ft above see level and one block off Newport Harbor. No eveidence whatsoever. That stretch of the CA coast faces mostly south so may be why. I am checking with a friend who has his boat in the water at Marina Del Rey. That is west facing, but so far no news.

On the north end of Vancouver Island we had about a 2 foot surge. But it was mid tide so we hardly noticed it. Lots of warnings out there for us.

My hart goes out to the people of the island of Japan.

I saw some video of nasty waves going through a marina in Santa Cruz. Is all safe in Newport Beach?

Glub, blub, blub, blub.

Just kidding, it was definitely an awesome experience. Everything one
sees on videos is true. The ocean recedes then rushes back in. After
traveling a few thousand miles across the ocean, it had dissipated to 8' and lost a
lot of energy so everything happened in slow motion. Actually, because
of the topography of our local ocean bottom, tsunamis are amplified in
this area. That's why we are the tsunami capital of the world. Not in
magnitude but in number. We did have a Darwin Award winner
with a few runners up. We also had a few sunken boats which were
mostly scowls with a lot of insurance. The harbor was scheduled to be
rebuilt starting this summer so the old one was just demolished a few
months early. All in all, here at least it was a good day.

Southern California suffered next to no damage. I read four boats and a couple of docks in Catalina had some dmage and that was it.

Depending on how much the sea floor moves (displacement), and up or down, and what direction it pushes the water makes a huge difference.

Just seen an article on the waves track, it was moving at 800 KMH and the main north edge roughly hit mid Oregon and south.
